Surface structure is what the person actually says — already deleted, distorted and generalised.

Deep structure is the fuller, more specific experience underneath. Meta Model questions travel from surface toward deep structure.

Surface structure

“People never appreciate my work.” — what the client says out loud.

Distortion / Generalisation / Deletion

Recognise which linguistic move was made: who specifically, never?, appreciate how?

Meta Model question

One question, chosen for usefulness: “Who specifically hasn't appreciated it?”

Deeper, more specific structure

“My team lead didn't mention my report in Monday's review.” — now workable.

Distortions

Meaning has been altered: mind reading, lost performatives, cause & effect, complex equivalence, presuppositions.

Generalisations

One experience stands for all: universal quantifiers, modal operators of necessity and possibility.

Deletions

Information is missing: nominalisations, unspecified verbs, simple deletions, lack of referential index, comparative deletions.

How this model is taught

Bandler and Grinder modelled effective therapists; the Meta Model is taught here as the language-questioning model associated with Virginia Satir's work. It is this trainer's NLP model of language, not a universal scientific claim.

Presuppositions appear inside the Meta Model too. The Presuppositions module teaches the nine-label structure in depth; the Meta Model gives you faster pattern recognition and a specific challenge form for each violation.

The Milton Model runs the other way — deliberately broader, artfully vague language. It is not part of this module.

Core framework

Pattern → Response → Prediction

Three steps, always in this order. Pattern: which linguistic violation you hear. Response: the question you ask. Prediction: the information that question is designed to recover. If you cannot name the prediction, you are asking a question without a target.

1. Pattern

What was distorted, generalised or deleted? “She never listens to me.” — universal quantifier.

2. Response

The challenge form that belongs to that pattern. “Never? Was there a time she did?”

3. Prediction

What you expect to recover: a counterexample, and with it the specific occasion.

When to ask

  • Ask immediately when the missing, deleted, distorted or generalised information is blocking your understanding of the problem.
  • Otherwise note the phrase, let the client finish, and come back to it — clients rarely lose a pattern worth recovering.
  • Neither is a rule. Rapport and the client's flow decide which you choose.

On “why” questions

Reach for precision questions — “what specifically?”, “how specifically?”, “what prevents you?”, “what would happen if…?” A bare “why?” often invites more reasons and justification instead of recovering the information you predicted. “Why” is not banned; it is simply rarely the question with a target.

The class loop

  1. 1.Client gives a problem sentence.
  2. 2.Learner identifies the pattern or patterns present.
  3. 3.Learner chooses the primary pattern from the prediction — what is most useful to recover.
  4. 4.Learner asks the challenge.
  5. 5.Client answers.
  6. 6.Learner asks a follow-up question on that answer.
  7. 7.Deeper, more specific structure.

Practitioner judgement

  • Do not challenge every pattern mechanically.
  • Ask which pattern, if challenged, most likely reveals the deeper structure or loosens the limiting representation.
  • You may need to temporarily accept one part of a sentence in order to challenge another.
  • One sentence often fits two or three patterns. There is no single right answer if you can justify the logic and form a valid recovery question.
  • Prefer curiosity over confrontation.
  • Stay with the client's words — never invent facts or diagnoses.
