Meta Model · Pattern 8 of 13
Modal Operator of Possibility / Impossibility
A limit is stated as a fact about the world rather than a belief about the map.
Recover: The barrier, and the route to possibility
What it is
'Can't' marks a closed door. The practitioner's direction of travel is from impossibility toward possibility — first by finding what specifically stands in the way.
Recognition / tip-offs
What has been distorted, generalised or deleted
- Generalised: a limit holds everywhere and always
- Deleted: the specific barrier
- Deleted: what would need to change for it to be possible
Client-language use
"I can't tell him the truth", "I can't trust anyone anymore." The second usually hides a specific person and a specific event.
How to challenge it
Find the barrier, then open the possibility frame. Both directions are useful; the barrier usually comes first.
- “What prevents you?”
- “What stops you?”
- “What would happen if you could?”
- “What would need to happen for it to become possible?”
Practitioner judgement: challenge what is useful, not every pattern you can hear.
What to recover
You are recovering cause and possibility. Convert impossibility toward possibility at the client's pace, offering rather than insisting.
Client autonomy first — offer language the client can verify and decline.
Examples
“I can't trust anyone anymore.”
Missing Who specifically, trust to do what, and what happened.
Challenge: “What stops you? Who specifically broke that trust?”
Possibility + lack of referential index + unspecified verb.
“I will never be able to learn this.”
Missing Learn what, by when, and what has been tried.
Challenge: “What would need to happen for you to learn the first part of it?”
“I can't make decisions.”
Missing Which decisions, and what happens at the point of deciding.
Challenge: “What stops you, at the moment you're about to decide?”
Common confusion and overlap
- Answering the 'can't' with reassurance instead of a question
- Missing the deletions travelling with it ('trust anyone' — who?)
- Jumping to 'what if you could?' before the barrier is known
