Presuppositions
Something has to be accepted as true for the sentence to make sense at all — and it usually passes unexamined.
Recover: The assumption that carries the problem
What it is
The Presuppositions module teaches the nine-label structure in depth. Inside the Meta Model, the skill is faster: hear the assumption, decide whether it is worth challenging, and pick the one that carries the problem.
Recognition / tip-offs
What has been distorted, generalised or deleted
- Distorted: an assumption is smuggled in as a given
- Deleted: any evidence for the assumption
- Deleted: the possibility that the assumption is false
Client-language use
"If my husband knew how much I suffered, he wouldn't do that." Presupposed: a husband exists; she has suffered; he is doing something; he does not know about the suffering. Any of those can be the way in.
How to challenge it
Choose strategically. To keep a conversation moving you accept some presuppositions and challenge the one closest to the problem.
- “How specifically did you suffer?”
- “How do you know he doesn't know?”
- “What is he doing, exactly?”
- “How would you know if he did know?”
Practitioner judgement: challenge what is useful, not every pattern you can hear.
What to recover

Client autonomy first — offer language the client can verify and decline.
Examples
“If my husband knew how much I suffered, he wouldn't do that.”
Missing That a husband exists, that she suffered, that he is doing something, and that he does not know.
Challenge: “How do you know he doesn't know?”
“This problem will never go away.”
Missing That the problem exists as a fixed thing, and that time cannot change it.
Challenge: “What exactly is the problem — and never?”
Existence presupposition plus a universal quantifier.
Common confusion and overlap
- Trying to challenge every presupposition in a sentence at once
- Forgetting that you must accept some presuppositions to keep rapport
- Treating this as a separate skill from the Presuppositions module rather than the same one at speed
