Reframing · Pattern 6 of 7

Plausibility, Fit & Repair

A reframe is a proposal. Fit is decided by the client, and rejection is repaired rather than defended.

OFFER TENTATIVELY → READ THE RESPONSE → REPAIR OR MOVE ONDelivery

Recover: Whether the frame actually fits this client

What it is

TRAINER METHOD. The difference between a practitioner and somebody performing cleverness. A useful reframe is plausible, relevant, respectful, built from the client's language and tested. When the client says “that doesn't fit”, the correct move is to drop it and ask what does.

Recognition / tip-offs

The client goes quiet or polite after your reframe“I suppose so…”“No, that's not it.”You find yourself explaining why your reframe is right

What has been distorted, generalised or deleted

  • A well-formed reframe must land
  • Disagreement means the client is resisting

Client-language use

Rejection usually arrives with better information attached — the client tells you what the frame missed.

How to challenge it

Acknowledge the mismatch, ask the client for their own alternative meaning or context, and rebuild from what they say.

  • Does any of that fit, or does it miss something?
  • What would fit better?
  • What else could it mean, from where you're standing?

Practitioner judgement: challenge what is useful, not every pattern you can hear.

What to recover

Offer with a tentative preface, then hand the judgement back. Deliberately practise being wrong gracefully.

Client autonomy first — offer language the client can verify and decline.

Examples

“Could it be about her week rather than about you?” / “No, that doesn't fit.” → “Fair enough, scrap it. What makes it specifically about you?”

Purposeful

Missing The reframe was a proposal, not a diagnosis.

Common confusion and overlap

  • Defending the reframe
  • Repeating it in different words
  • Treating rejection as resistance to be overcome
