Presupposition

Something must be taken as true for the sentence or the frame to make sense at all.

X must be accepted for the sentence to workMeta Model inverse

Recover: Leaves the assumption unexamined while attention moves elsewhere

Language skill is not permission to override choice.

Preserve meaningful consent — the listener always keeps a real option to decline.

What it is

“You are learning many things” moves attention to how many, while learning itself is simply assumed. This is the single most reusable Milton pattern, and the nine-label structure is taught in depth in the Presuppositions module — use it rather than learning it twice.

Recognition / tip-offs

how many / how easily / how soonbefore / after / while / whenanother / the nextstill / yet / alreadynotice / realise / discover

What space this leaves the listener to fill

  • The assumed content is treated as settled
  • Attention travels to the part being questioned
  • The listener fills in the assumed content from their own experience

How it lands for the listener

Trainer chain: “you are learning many things” — learning is assumed; only the quantity is offered for consideration.

How to construct it

Precision check: what exactly am I assuming on the client's behalf, and would they agree if I asked directly? Assume process and capability, never facts about their life.

  • What am I assuming here?
  • Would the client accept this assumption if I stated it plainly?
  • Which nine-label pattern is this — existence, time, awareness, adverb, ordinal…?

Practitioner judgement: enough vagueness to invite meaning, not so much that rapport breaks.

Purposeful use — with consent

Assume the client's ability and the direction of the work, not the content of their experience. Open the Presuppositions module for the full nine-pattern treatment.

Client autonomy first — offer language the client can verify and decline.

Examples

You haven't noticed yet how much has already shifted.

Purposeful

Listener fills in Something has shifted; noticing is still to come.

Common confusion and overlap

  • Relearning presuppositions here instead of using the dedicated module.
  • Presupposing facts about the client's life rather than process.
