Double Bind
Two choices are offered, and both of them presuppose or lead toward the same broader action or outcome.
Recover: Offers choice at one level while the larger frame stays constant
Language skill is not permission to override choice.
Preserve meaningful consent — the listener always keeps a real option to decline.

Trainer example, in a learning context: learn this or learn that, in whatever order suits you.
How to construct it
Ethics flag: if both options hide a commitment the client has not made, this is a false alternative, not a double bind you should use. Structure being correct does not make the communication acceptable.
- “Does the client know what the shared frame is?”
- “Is “neither” still an available answer?”
- “Would I be comfortable if they saw the structure?”
Practitioner judgement: enough vagueness to invite meaning, not so much that rapport breaks.
Purposeful use — with consent
Use for benign process choices — order, pace, which exercise first. Never for material decisions, purchases, consent, healthcare, money, or with vulnerable people.
Client autonomy first — offer language the client can verify and decline.
Examples
“Would you like to start with the breathing piece or the journalling piece?”
Listener fills in Practice starts today; the client picks the route.
Acceptable — the client already agreed to practise.
“Would you prefer to pay monthly or annually?”
Listener fills in A purchase has been agreed.
Not acceptable if they never agreed to buy. Pattern accurate, communication coercive.
Common confusion and overlap
- Scoring the structure and ignoring whether the frame was consented to.
- Removing “neither” as an option.
