Milton Model · Pattern 3 of 19

Cause & Effect

An implied causative links one experience to another: because, makes, if…then, as…then, when…then.

A causes BMeta Model inverse

Recover: Leaves the mechanism unstated while linking two experiences

Language skill is not permission to override choice.

Preserve meaningful consent — the listener always keeps a real option to decline.

What it is

Milton use links something already happening to something useful next: “as you sit with that, you may find it settles.” The joint carries the sentence; the mechanism is never specified.

Recognition / tip-offs

becausemakesif… thenas… thenwhen… thenthe more… the more

What space this leaves the listener to fill

  • That the first experience is happening
  • That the second follows from it
  • The listener supplies the connection

How it lands for the listener

Trainer chain: “It's good to wonder because…” — the because does the work whatever follows it.

How to construct it

Precision check: am I stating a causation I cannot support, or promising an outcome? Make it invitational — “as you practise, you may notice…” rather than “this will make you confident”.

  • Am I promising a result?
  • Would “may” or “can” be more honest here than “will”?
  • Is this cause real, or convenient?

Practitioner judgement: enough vagueness to invite meaning, not so much that rapport breaks.

Purposeful use — with consent

Link practice with possibility, not with guarantees. Never state false causation about health, money or outcomes.

Client autonomy first — offer language the client can verify and decline.

Examples

Because you are already asking the question, something has started moving.

Purposeful

Listener fills in The question was asked; movement exists.

Common confusion and overlap

  • Confusing A causes B with A means B — that second one is complex equivalence.
  • Turning an invitation into a promise.
