Chunking · Pattern 11 of 13
Structure of Overwhelm
Overwhelm as a chunk-size problem: the current level is too large to act on.
Recover: An actionable chunk size
What it is
MANUAL MODEL — 'The Structure of Overwhelm: Too Big Chunks.' LAUNCH THE BUSINESS is accurate and unusable. The recognition skill is noticing non-actionability as the signal; the recovery is downward until the unit is something a person could start this afternoon.
Recognition / tip-offs
What has been distorted, generalised or deleted
- The size, not the person, is the problem
- Smaller units exist
- Action restores agency
Client-language use
Listen for a level with no verbs a hand could perform. That is the diagnostic, and it is linguistic.
How to challenge it
Chunk down twice: to pieces, then to first concrete actions.
- “What are the parts of that?”
- “What specifically would the first piece be?”
- “What could you do with that in the next hour?”
Practitioner judgement: challenge what is useful, not every pattern you can hear.
What to recover
Reduce chunk size until action is obvious, then let the person choose which piece.
Client autonomy first — offer language the client can verify and decline.
Examples
“LAUNCH THE BUSINESS → decide the offer / take payment / tell people → write one sentence describing the offer.”
Missing Same goal, actionable level.
Common confusion and overlap
- Motivating instead of chunking down
- Chunking down to a list so long it is a second overwhelm
- Treating overwhelm as a character trait
