Move Across — Lateral Chunking
Reach another example at roughly the same level of abstraction by going up to the shared class and back down elsewhere.
Recover: A parallel at the same level
What it is
MANUAL FOUNDATION for same-level siblings (buses, boats, cars, planes, trains all sit under transportation). There is no sideways door on the diagram: practically, you chunk up until the two things share a class, then chunk down a branch you did not come from. That single mechanic is what makes analogy, reframing and metaphor construction possible.
Recognition / tip-offs
What has been distorted, generalised or deleted
- Two things can share a level
- Structure can travel between branches
- Surface content is changeable; relationships are the payload
Client-language use
A client fused with their own content can often see the same structure instantly in another domain — a garden, a road, an instrument — because nothing is at stake there.
How to challenge it
Check the parallel is genuinely at a similar level and shares the relationship, not just the mood.
- “What is this an example of? — then — what are other examples of that?”
- “Where else does this exact relationship show up?”
- “What is the same shape, in a different world?”
Practitioner judgement: challenge what is useful, not every pattern you can hear.
What to recover
Lateral movement is the engine of the Metaphor Lab. Use it deliberately: up for structure, sideways for a world, down to make that world real.
Client autonomy first — offer language the client can verify and decline.
Examples
“Car → (up) transportation → (down) train. Same level, different branch.”
Missing The manual's sibling set, reached by the up-then-down mechanic.
“Pushing harder at a blocked route → (up) inflexible strategy → (down) a driver at a closed bridge.”
Missing Structure preserved, world changed.
MIND VILLAGE TRAINER METHOD / APP EXPANSION: using lateral movement on purpose to build a coaching metaphor.
Common confusion and overlap
- Jumping sideways without going up first, so the parallel is arbitrary
- Choosing a world that matches the emotion but not the relationships
- Landing at a wildly different level of abstraction and calling it parallel
