Exclusive / Inclusive
Language can frame options as mutually exclusive alternatives (either / or) or as alternatives that may coexist (both / and).

What it is
Exclusive framing presupposes that choosing one option rules out the other: "Either I keep the job or I have a life." Inclusive framing presupposes the options can coexist: "You can keep the job and build a life you want." Either way, the frame itself usually passes unnoticed — which is exactly why it is worth hearing.

What is being presupposed
- Exclusive: the two options cannot both be true
- Exclusive: the list of options is complete
- Inclusive: the options are compatible
Client-language use
Clients often present a false either/or and then feel trapped by it. Test whether the exclusion is real before working inside it.
How to challenge it
Question whether the options genuinely exclude each other, and whether the list is complete.
- “What would it be like to have both?”
- “What makes those two impossible together?”
- “What other options are there besides those two?”
Practitioner judgement: challenge what is useful, not every pattern you can hear.
Purposeful practitioner use
Inclusive framing can widen a narrowed choice without deciding for the client: "You could take your time and start today." Offer the wider frame; let them choose.
Client autonomy first — offer language the client can verify and decline.
Examples
“Either I look after my parents or I move abroad.”
Presupposed The two are mutually exclusive and the only options.
Challenge: “What would it take for both to be possible?”
“You can take this slowly and still make a start today.”
Presupposed Slowness and starting are compatible.
Common mistakes
- Working hard inside a false either/or instead of testing it
- Reading every 'or' as exclusive
